Most of the correspondence was written when both Auchincloss and Onassis were in boarding school and college. The series also contains one letter from Caroline Kennedy and one photograph.

Hugh D. Auchincloss (b. 1927) was the son of Hugh Dudley Auchincloss, lawyer and stockbroker, and Maya (Maria) de Chrapovitsky. He was Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis' step-brother and close personal friend. Auchincloss' father married Janet Lee Bouvier in June 1942.
